Electric lift chairs are a kind of mobility lifting aid that is designed to make it safer to stand and sit. These devices are designed to raise the chair and its occupant upwards, so that the occupant can exit the lift chair on their feet. When the chair is fully raised, the seat of the lift chair is slightly angled, but not so much that there would be a concern about falling from the chair. Instead, it is possible to remain seated and lower the chair, or simply stand, without assistance from a loved one or caretaker.
Kinds Of Lift Chairs
There are three main kinds of lift chairs, providing a simple way to categorize the many models, which could otherwise seem overwhelming. The most common type of lift chair is the three position lift chair, which reclines almost completely horizontally. Two position lift chairs are less common and recline to a lesser degree, typically about 45 degrees. This makes a two position lift chair well suited for watching TV or reading, but since it does not full recline, a two position lift chair is not as good of a choice for sleeping.
The other type of lift chair is the infinite position lift chair. An infinite position lift chair will recline farther than a two position or three position lift chair, making it the best choice for taking a nap or sleeping. Also, an infinite position lift chair allows the user to operate the footrest and backrest independently. This means you can extend the footrest without having to extend the backrest and vice versa. This differs from other lift chair types, in which the footrest and backrest operate as one.
It is important to note, that the names 2 position and 3 position can actually be a little misleading, because it would be an easy conclusion to draw that these chairs can only achieve 2 or 3 positions. This is not true though, because they can actually achieve many more, limited only by how far the chair can recline. This means you can stop a 2 position lift chair, for example, at any point up until you reach its 45 degree limit, making it a very customizable chair.
While lift chairs are very popular for seniors, and are even partially covered by Medicare, they are also used by people who have leg, hip, or knee injuries that make standing difficult.
