Medical lift chairs look similar to regular recliners, but they’re equipped with reinforced frames and lift mechanisms that raise the seated person to a standing position with the push of a button. People use a medical lift chair to relieve the difficulty of getting out of regular chairs and standing from a seated position.

-
Step 1
Position the chair so that it’s at least 2 feet away from any walls or surrounding furniture. Most lift chairs recline at least 18 inches back to lower the user into a reclined position and are strong enough to knock over objects in their path, so give your lift chair plenty of room to move.
-
Step 2
Clear the area around and in front of the lift chair of any objects that could be knocked over. Don’t put area rugs in front of the lift chair because these could get caught on the foot of the chair when it reclines.
-
Step 3
Plug the chair into the wall with the attached cord and make sure the cord is plugged firmly into the chair. If the lift chair is equipped with a battery backup, check that this feature has been enabled so the user can still get out of the chair safely if there’s a power outage.
-
Step 4
Sit in the chair with your feet straight in front of you. You don’t need to lift your feet in the air; the lift chair will lift them for you.
-
Step 5
Press the button to recline the chair and hold it down until you’ve reached the position you want. Keep the controller within reach so you can safely lift yourself up out of the reclined position.
-
Step 6
Return to a standing position by pressing the button to move the chair forward so that it lifts you into a standing position. Keep your legs straight and let the chair’s lift mechanism lift you out of the chair and comfortably into a standing position.
