It Is Important To Find A Mattress That Feels Just Right
It is said, that a person spends at least 1/3 of the time in bed. That may be the case for you, but not necessarily. It depends on whether you lead a fairly ordinary life or the kind of life that severely restricts your sleeping hours. Policemen, firemen, physicians, nurses and many businessmen simply can’t spend that kind of time in bed.
Think of the housewife, who is up and about at night preparing the family’s laundry and lunches for the upcoming day. So, I think we can agree that the notion that people spend long hours in bed is somewhat of a myth more than a reality in many cases. What is important however, is the quality of sleep realized, once the individual does bed down for that much needed rest.
Think of the number of times you have said, “I need to get a better bed or mattress”. Whether you were in bed for one hour or 12 hours, the fact is, the quality of the product dictates the quality of your rest. Everyone likes a bargain, but is it really worth it to bargain away your satisfaction, just to save a few bucks? I can’t think of any time that this applies more than when selecting a bed or mattress.
The body does more than crave sleep, it requires it. It is therefore important that one chooses a bed or mattress that will support the proper spinal alignment, to reduce tossing and turning and also one that will allow a deep and restful sleep. If you find that you are awakening in the middle of the night, or arising in the morning feeling unrested, it is likely that your bed is not providing the comfort that it should.
Currently, there are a number of products on the market that will provide a better sleep environment, but it is important that the quality of the product be taken into consideration. That is difficult when buying on the Internet as the competition is stiff and sellers tend to offer products near cost.
Ask yourself a few telling questions. If its being sold at this price, what did the seller pay in order to arrive at a profit. If someone is selling you a mattress for $200 be wary. It might look great and feel great at first, but how will it feel six months to a year from now.
Many sellers will offer you even a 60 day trial period because they know that even poorly constructed mattresses will retain their loft and the initial feeling of comfort for the first few months. Thus the real truth about the quality of the mattress or the level of comfort won’t likely be known until the trial period is over, even for a poor mattress.
Ask questions about the manufacturer. Is the manufacturer well known, or highly regarded within the sleep industry? How is the bed constructed? Can you make choices? Or is there only one product or design to choose from.
For instance, some people love memory foam, but others don’t care for it at all. Some like latex and others prefer synthetic foam or innerspring mattresses, but the choice tends to be very personal. Let’s go over a few of the popular choices:
Memory Foam
This is probably the hottest product in the sleep industry right now and for good reason. Memory Foam which was initially designed by NASA to be used in the close confines of the space capsule yet provide the best possible sleep for astronauts has been adapted for the everyday consumer.
The name Tempur-pedic ™ always comes up with discussing this product, as they were the first to take on the NASA model and redesign it for everyday use. By the way, although NASA did the early designs, they never used it in any space missions.
Memory Foam is made of millions of tiny round dense viscoelastic memory cells. These cells react to temperature, thus conforming to the shape of the person using the product. The warmer the temperature, the softer and more pliable the foam becomes.
When the temperature is cooler, the foam is less compliant. As the body shifts, the cells continue to conform and reshape. That’s why many users have the sense that the bed was made just for them.
Memory foam is usually purchased according to thickness and density. The more density the product has, generally the better quality it is. In fact, the higher the density, the less likely it is that the mattress will bottom out and the more likely it will hold its shape.
It usually indicates, as well the level of comfort. The density measures the weight of the product per cubic foot. Thus a 4 lb topper weighs 4 lbs per cubic foot. Many in the industry believe that the 4 lb. topper is ideal for the average consumer. Not too soft; not too hard.
You will see ratings known as ILD (Indentation Load Deflection ratings). These ratings range from 10 to 100. Most mattresses and toppers range from 12 to 15 ILD for their top layers.
The higher the rating the firmer the mattress. The inner core foam layers of the mattress may reach into the high 20′s or 30′s as this is where the support is needed. The ILD rating will give you a sense of the firmness of the mattress. The higher the ILD, the more weight it requires to compress or indent one cubic foot of the foam product.
Since both the density and thickness of foam effects firmness, it is important to keep that in mind when purchasing memory foam and latex products. For instance, a 5 lb., 4 inch topper would be much firmer than a 4 lb, 3 inch topper.
We usually recommend that the 4 inch toppers be used by those with bad back or other orthopedic problems. The individual with the healthy back may not be comfortable with this level of thickness and density.
Latex
Latex has been around for a very long time. It is a naturally occuring product that is derived from the rubber tree. It is hypoallergenic and resists bacteria, mold, mildew and mites. Latex mattresses and toppers conform easily to the sleeper and provide an unparalleled level of comfort.
Although Latex has some of the same characteristics a memory foam, there are differences. They both conform to the sleeper and are ideal at relieving pressure points. They both are measured according to density and thickness. However, latex is not as sensitive to heat, thus will not retain heat or require a steady room temperature as memory foam does. It is unusual to notice an odor with latex.
Adjustable Beds
Just as selecting a mattress is important in determining the level of comfort for the sleeper, other products affect comfort as well. This is the case with the adjustable bed which has been around for more than 30 years, but has been refined over the years to provide the ultimate in comfort when paired with the correct mattress.
Adjustable beds are more common today than ever. They are remain expensive and are more commonly seen in the homes of the affluent. As society becomes more affluent, we see more and more of these beds in use by those who can afford the best.
Adjustable beds come in several styles, but the basis for the bed is to give the user an opportunity to reposition the bed to improve comfort. Most beds have three core positions that will raise or lower the head, feet or midsection. Higher premium beds are capable of of repositioning as many as seven different areas of the bed.
To further induce pleasure or comfort, adjustable beds now have massage features to help relieve pressure and stress and to ease aches and pains. It is important therefore that buyers of adjustable beds make the right choices about a mattress. Often buyers will purchase an adjustable bed unit, but select a mattress that is not appropriate for the bed.
Although the high profile mattress is very popular today, any profile above 12 1/2 inches will severely reduce the massage benefits of an adjustable bed. Also, the higher the profile, the less flexibility the mattress will have.
The best mattress for an adjustable bed, is an adjustable mattress which is made by mattress companies specifically to work with the adjustable bed unit. Memory foam and Latex mattresses work well with adjustable beds as well because of their flexibility and ability to contort.
According to the Mattress Industry, there are a number of health benefits related to the adjustable bed:
- relieving back and neck tension
- reducing the incidence of asthma by providing better positioning to improve breathing
- easing circulatory problems
- decreasing the intensity of acid reflux
- reducing the swelling in feet and ankles by elevating the legs
- general overall relaxation for the body
Our best advice to you is to take your time and think about your current sleep habits and what has worked for you and what has not before making your decision to purchase a sleep product.
If you are having persistent problems with sleep, share this information with your medical professional to rule out conditions such as sleep apnea.
