About The Sealy Mattresses

Sealy Posturepedic Mattresses are designed by orthopedic surgeons. Their trademark characteristic is their interlocking coil system which provides added stability and durability.

Compared to Simmons, the other leading brand, Sealy beds usually feel slightly firmer and are best for couples who are light sleepers. Couples who get in and out of bed frequently throughout the night may be better served by the independent coil system of the Simmons which isolates movement.

History

Sealy has been around for more than 125 years, originating in Sealy, Texas. The founder, Daniel Haynes, sold his patented mattress technology to a Texas company who started marketing the mattresses as Sealy in 1906.

The company grew through the roaring twenties and barely survived the great depression, finally creating their famous Sealy Posturepedic mattress in 1950. This was the first mattress that was designed to provide solid back support.

Sealy mattresses have continued to incorporate high-tech coils, first with programmed coils for increased support and later with their PostureTech Coil. Most recently Sealy launched their own memory foam product, TrueForm, as well as the SpringFree mattress which has a latex core.

he Sealy Comfort Series Memory Foam mattress was designed to be a more affordable memory foam product. Even though the Blue Lake Firm is a bit cheaper than most of your name brand memory foam products, it still uses 3 inches of memory foam. That is the same amount of memory foam that Tempurepedic uses in their entry level memory foam mattress. Although the Blue Lake Firm has the same amount of memory foam, it is a lesser quality foam that is not going to be as durable. A question re: the Sealy PurEmbrace line…since I am stuck, which would you recommend for side/stomach sleepers?

Is there a better version as far as motion on a queen bed (so not waking light sleepers?), we also don’t like anything too firm. Appreciate your guidance…will look to buy from you for our remodel/guest rooms.

Hi Lynn.

Latex does a great job of limiting motion transfer. In the Sealy PurEmbrace line, try the Autumn Garden plush. It should be supportive enough for a stomach sleeper, while soft enough for the hips. Make sure that you rotate your new mattress.
You should rotate your new mattress, at least, once a month for the first year. It should only be necessary a few times a year after that. If your bed is one of the thicker, softer models, it may be necessary to rotate it every couple of weeks for the first few months or so. People tend to sleep farther apart in a king size mattress.

What happens is, the center where no one sleeps, stays like new while body impressions form on either side. To insure that the padding settles evenly, rotate the mattress a quarter turn. A king isn’t exactly square, but it’s square enough. It’ll hang over about an inch on each side when turned this way.

As the world’s largest bedding manufacturer, Sealy Corporation recognizes the importance of environmental sustainability and takes seriously our corporate responsibility for good stewardship in this effort. We provide high quality, durable sleep sets that provide our customers with the highest levels of comfort and wellness.

Our goal is to reach an acceptable balance between sustainability and product quality, performance and durability, based upon the practical application of the most advanced technologies available. We are currently embarking on a two-fold approach to reduce our environmental footprint:

To ensure that our current operations, and the operations of our suppliers, are as environmentally friendly as possible.
To search for economically feasible ways to improve the sustainability of our products.

Here are the steps that Sealy has taken to improve the environmental sustainability of our products:

WOOD *

Sealy’s lumber resource is certified to SFI (Sustainable Forestry Initiative) and CSA (Canadian Standard Association) standards. This lumber company:

Supplied 66% of its fuel needs through “green” fuel sources (biomass, i.e., bark and sawdust, as well as landfill gas) in 2008.
Self-generates 46% of its energy needs (fuel & electricity) using renewable sources (co-generation from biomass and hydroelectricity).
Reduced Greenhouse Gas emissions by 31% in intensity (per ton) and 52% total since 2000.

STEEL *

100% of the steel products in Sealy sleep sets come from recycled steel.
Because of our patented design, Sealy innerspring units can be compressed instead of baled, so that more innerspring units fit into a truckload. Fewer truckloads provide greater fuel efficiency and reduced emissions.

FOAMS *

Sealy’s foam supplier recycles 100% of its polyurethane scrap for use in the production of other consumer products (i.e., carpet).

LEAN MANUFACTURING *

Scrap Reduction:
- Sealy has reduced its scrap by 69% from approximately 1.8 lbs per piece produced in June 2004 to approximately .55 lbs per piece produced in June 2008.
- In the first quarter of 2009, Sealy reduced its recycled scrap 4.2% ahead of target (lbs per unit sold).
Recycling:
- 100% of manufacturing scrap from all Sealy’s plants is taken by a third party company to be recycled for other products. Scrap includes textiles, foams and plastics.
- Both wood and metal pallets are sent back to Sealy’s plants for re-use.
Logistics
- Sealy uses a route optimization software system that streamlines delivery and minimizes the fuel use of its truck fleet.
- Sealy has consolidated transportation in North America where appropriate.
- Sealy has selected suppliers based on their proximity to Sealy plants.
- Subsequently, Sealy has reduced its Carbon Dioxide emissions by 13.6%.
Non-Essential Materials Reduction
- Sealy has minimized the use of secondary materials that are not critical to bed manufacturing and has developed environmentally preferable options (i.e., reduced corrugated packaging).

FIRE RETARDANT MATERIALS
Sealy chose to use only environmentally-friendly fire retardant materials to meet the new U.S. Code of Federal Standards, Title 16, Part 1633, Standard for the Flammability (Open Flame) on Mattress Sets. By design, Sealy’s fire retardant materials have inherent re-retardant properties. As a result, no chemicals, including halogens, or harsh metals, are used in Sealy’s fire retardant materials.
SECONDARY BEDDING
Sealy has created an entire division to channel excess production to secondary bedding markets. This minimizes the amount of products and materials going to landfills, and includes:

Sleep sets produced from excess raw materials
Production overruns
Off-specification sleep sets
Prototypes and experimental sleep sets

A. When was the last time you thought about your mattress? Many of us forget that our mattresses are the most utilized piece of furniture we own. In fact, if you sleep 8 hours a night, in one year you’ll rack up 3,000 hours on your mattress. After 10 years, you’ll have logged 30,000 hours on the same bed. Listed below are a few hints that indicate it’s time to start thinking about renewing your sleep surface.

1. You bought your current mattress over 8 years ago.

2. You wake up feeling more tired than when you went to sleep.
