I get confused myself with all the new memory foam mattresses on the market – from no name companies to now the likes of Serta and Sealy.

The best guidance I can give you is to tread cautiously – while all these memory foam mattresses may aspire and even look like the Tempur-Pedic, that doesn’t mean they have the same quality of foams or sleep comfort.

Here’s what I do when I look at a new memory foam mattress:

First I consider the quality of the foam and the source. I ask what is the density of foam of the different foam layers used in the memory foam mattress, and also who manufacturers the foam and how long they’ve been making this particular grade of memory foam (although a retailer may not know this information – but they can certainly ask and get back to you with this).

Then I ask question about this specific memory foam mattress. How long they have been making this particular memory foam mattress, what type of use experience they’ve heard from customers – compression issues, sleep issues – hot, smelly, slow rebound that makes turning over difficult, too firm of memory foam, too soft of memory foam, etc, what type of return experience – how many returns over what time period – and make sure they have a good return policy.

Another area to ask about is warranty and return questions. What type of warranty comes with the mattress and what does it exactly cover – all prorated or just a portion of the period in the later years prorated and full payment in earlier years – and who pays for shipping if there is an issue and what will you have to do to prove a warranty problem, and do you need a new foundation for the mattress?

A related issue is whether they have a money back trial on the mattress. I’ve talked to lots of people that have gotten burned spending a great deal of money on a mattress they just end up not finding comfortable – and they can’t return or can only exchange.

I think a money back trial is really essential, especially since a foam mattress may be such a different feel than your current bed. I’ve always offered this on any mattress I sell, and given the price of these type of mattresses you may want to steer clear of those that don’t have a return policy.

Make sure you understand the way the policy works and your total cost on a return – some places hit you up for return shipping both ways, a restocking fee, etc. that can make the return policy very expensive.

The best policies are just ones that would require you to pay return shipping. But remember, it is important to really give these kind of beds a few weeks trial before deciding if you like it. I’ve found that people often need time to adjust to the feel of a foam bed, but once they do they really find it comfortable. A few weeks should be sufficient time to decide if the bed is for you.

About Sealy History, It’s Orgins

In the small town of Sealy, Texas just outside of Houston, a cotton gin builder and operator by the name of Daniel Haynes responded to a request from a neighbor and built a cotton-filled mattress in 1881. The product was so favorably received that Daniel Haynes began receiving more and more requests from neighbors and relatives. Encouraged by the response, Haynes invented a machine that compressed cotton for use in mattresses and received a patent for his invention in 1889.

In 1906, Haynes sold all of his patents and know-how to a Texas Company that took the name of Sealy. By 1920, Sealy had 28 licensed plants.

The Great Depression

Business flourished until the Great Depression hit with full force and mattress sales declined drastically. Sealy might have become history except for the support of the eight strongest Sealy licensees, including The Ohio Mattress Company, who pooled their financial resources, paid off the debt of the licensing Company and created what was to become known as Sealy, Inc. The 1930′s were tough, but these eight determined licensees survived and, in fact, introduced a new product – the Button Free Innerspring.

Brand Creation

In 1950, the Company introduced its first Sealy Posturepedic brand mattress. In 1956, Sealy became the first Company to display and advertise king sized bedding.

The 1960′s saw Sealy commission the first major research study to define the profile of the Sealy Posturepedic consumer. In 1967, Sealy Posturepedic TV commercials ran during prime time on national television; another first for the industry.

The 1970′s brought major product developments and refinements. In December 1983 Sealy purchased the Stearns & Foster Company. This firm, founded in 1846, had a long and successful history under its two founding partners, George S. Stearns and Seth C. Foster. The brand was distributed primarily east of the Mississippi River and through major department stores. The Company expanded production facilities to serve the entire country.

The 1980′s saw the introduction of a new innerspring innovation – the Sealy Posturetech Coil with “sense and respond” features now used in Sealy Posturepedic mattresses.

Toward the end of the 80′s a series of lawsuits between Sealy, Inc. and one of its largest licensees, The Ohio Mattress Company, was resolved. Following the settlements of these lawsuits, all but one domestic Sealy licensee was consolidated under The Ohio Mattress Company. The Corporate Headquarters were relocated from Chicago, Illinois to Cleveland, Ohio.

In April 1989, The Ohio Mattress Company, then a publicly traded company on the New York Stock Exchange, went private and a majority interest was acquired by an investment group led by Gibbons, Goodwin Van Amerongen, a New York merchant banking firm. The Ohio Mattress Company changed its name to Sealy Corporation in 1990.

In spring of 1990, the Company initiated a series of transactions to reduce indebtedness and issued stock to an affiliate of the First Boston Company, an investment banking Company, that had financed a substantial portion of the leveraged buy out which took Sealy private. By November of 1991, First Boston owned approximately 94% of the Company’s stock.

In February 1993, the First Boston affiliate sold all of its Company stock to an investment group led by Zell Chilmark Fund L.P., an investment fund based in Chicago, Illinois.

In 1994 Sealy decided to expand its International horizons with the objective of increasing its global presence. While expansion of owned and operated facilities was the number one preference, it was also decided that expansion through joint ventures, distributors, dealers, direct export and licensees would be pursued as well. As a result of this strategy, a new International Division was formed to assess world-wide opportunities, while developing a team to execute a global strategy.

Today, the Company owns and operates manufacturing and marketing operations in Canada, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, France, Italy, Korea and Uruguay. In addition, there are twelve International licensees operating in Australia, Israel, Jamaica, Dominican Republic, Bahamas, Saudi Arabia, Japan, New Zealand, Thailand, South Africa, Spain and the United Kingdom. Direct exporting of Sealy products are made to various other markets throughout the world.

In the mid-1990′s, the Company repositioned Stearns & Foster as an upscale and luxury branded line of bedding.

In December 1997, Sealy management joined with Bain Capital, a Boston based investment capital group, to acquire approximately 90% of the Company’s equity.

In early 1998, Sealy announced the strategic decision to move its Corporate Headquarters, its Corporate Training facilities and its Research & Development Center from the greater Cleveland, Ohio area to the Triad of North Carolina. The Lexington, North Carolina manufacturing facility was also relocated to the new 68 acre Corporate Complex.

During April 2004, Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. (KKR) and Sealy management acquired approximately 92 percent of Sealy Corporation, with existing Sealy shareholders retaining the remaining interest.

On April 7, 2006, the Sealy Corporation had its Initial Public Offering and became a publicly traded company for the first time. It is traded on the New York Stock Exchange with the stock ticker symbol: ZZ.

Today, within the United States, the Company owns and operates 17 bedding plants, 3 plants dedicated to the manufacture of innerspring and foundation component parts for use in the assembly of Sealy and Stearns & Foster mattresses and foundations, and one Latex processing plant.

About The Memory Foam Mattress

Memory Foam was discovered by NASA.  NASA was looking for a material that would absorb the tremendous G-Forces that were pushing against the astronauts during takeoff.  Swedish scientists decided that this material would be great for bedding products.

Now memory foam is used for all kinds of products from mattresses to pillows, from cushions, to pet beds and beyond., please take note of some very specific things that are going on with memory foam items.

If lbs. or pounds is not after the number used to describe the memory foam, DO NOT BUY THAT MATTRESS OR TOPPER!  This is a deceptive way of measuring memory foam using 2 cubic feet of memory foam to come up with the density rating they are using.  The actual measurement is for 1 cubic foot of memory foam.

1. Density is one of the most important things to watch for with memory foam.  If someone is saying their product is 5.0 or 6.0, make sure that it is followed by lbs. or pounds because that is how density is measured in memory foam.  Some sellers are referring to the weight of 2 cubic feet of memory foam, which is not a proper measurement.
2. Tempurpedic mattresses are made of 5.3 lb. density memory foam.  Doctors and Chiropractors recommend a 4.0 lb. memory foam because it is less firm and costs less.  Any density below 4.0 lb. is not going to last very long, the higher the density the longer the foam will retain all of its original properties.  anything less dense than 3.0 lb. memory foam is not recommended for bedding products because it doesn’t provide enough support to the body.
3. THE MOST IMPORTANT DETAIL!!! Density is not a measure of firmness, but a measure of quality.  ILD or IFD is the measure of firmness that you should be looking for with memory foam to determine how firm the bed is.  Tempur material has an ILD of 14.  Sensus has an ILD of 13 and so on.  Most memory foams range in firmness from and ILD of 8 to an ILD of 20.  20 is extremely firm, while 8 is extremely plush.  Look for a ILD range from 10 to 15 for the highest level of comfort.  You would want a 10 ILD foam if you want plush and 14 ILD foam if you want firm.
4. If an item is priced too low, there is probably a reason.  Unless a person is selling a used product, no memory foam topper or overlay should be selling for $25 – $30.  If a price is too good to be true, there is probably a reason for it.  Make sure you ask questions of sellers with prices that seem too low.  It is one thing to find a great deal and another to be ripped off and stuck with a product that isn’t what it should be.
5. Be wary of any mattress that has less than 2 inches of memory foam.  Memory foam mattresses all have a base to give support to the foam, not your body.  Stomach sleepers should use at least 2 inches of memory foam and side or back sleepers should have 3 or 4 inches of memory foam for proper support.

1. Stay informed! Be aware of what you like and what you don’t.  5.0 lb. memory foam can be too firm for some people.  If you like a softer mattress than you would be better off with the less expensive 4.0 lb. memory foam.  There are also beds that combine the firmness of 5.0 lb. foam with a plush softer layer of the 4.0 lb. foam.
2. Do your research! Check in as many places as possible.   Check what websites are offering products for and what they come with.  This will help you know what to expect from a good seller.
3. Make sure you know the density of the product you are buying.  It is important to know what to expect from your memory foam products.
4. Check the warranty! Tempurpedic warranties their mattresses for 20 years and you should not spend your money with a company that doesn’t give you at least a non-prorated 10 years on a warranty.  Any mattress should be warrantied for at least 10 years or the company doesn’t believe in their product.  If they don’t believe in their own product, why should you?
5. Check the trial time! You need at least a few weeks to find out whether memory foam is right for you.  If you don’t get at least a 30 day trial, don’t buy the mattress!  There is a reason for them not to offer you a trial.  Be wary of sellers that don’t offer a decent amount of time to test their product.  Keep in mind that you will have to repackage the mattress and ship it back at your own expense, you should feel good about purchasing from the retailer you choose.
