When a spill or accident causes odors in a mattress, getting rid of the smell can be an overwhelming task. The smell gets deep down into the fabric and padding making it nearly impossible to get to and clean. But rest assured, there is a way to get those odors out for good. So if you’ve got a musty smell in your mattress, follow these steps and say bye-bye to stinky mattress odors!

1. Step 1

   Take care of the spill as soon as possible. The sooner you get it up, the easier it will be to prevent or remove odors. This rule applies to all liquid spills or accidents whether it be from spilled beverages or bed wetting. Blot up as much of the wetness as possible with a very absorbent towel. If the odor was caused by a bodily fluid such as urine or sweat, apply an enzyme cleaner to break down the composition of the accident and neutralize odor.

2. Step 2

   Next, pour about a cup (more or less depending on the accident size) of “wintergreen” rubbing alcohol onto the affected area of the mattress. Allow this to dry completely.
   Not to worry, the strong alcohol smell will dissipate as it dries. If the smell was caused by a dry source such as smoke, this step alone should take care of the problem.

3. Step 3

   After it is completely dry, check for any lingering odor. Step two will generally knock out most smells the first time. But if the odor is particularly offensive, repeat step two.

4. Step 4

   For a finishing touch, I like to use a disinfecting spray such as Lysol to kill any odor causing germs that may still be hiding in the fabric. Despite what you may think, these sprays are safe to use on porous surfaces and are very effective at killing germs on soft surfaces as well as hard. The alcohol will kill most of the bacteria, but when it comes to offensive odors, it’s better safe than sorry. A finishing mist of disinfecting spray will go the extra step to ensure a germ and odor free mattress.
