Ever wonder how the mattress was made and how it was being conceptualized. Here is A Brief History Of The Mattress, the word mattress comes from the Arabic word that means “to throw” and “place where something is thrown”. Basically it was also called “mat or cushion.”

This was embraced by the Europeans during the assimilation with the Arab culture. From there the word “materas” descended mainly referred to as a material thrown on the floor to be slept on.
During the times of Neolithic period, the mattress was invented and was pictured to consist of a pile of leaves, grass, or possibly straw with animal skins over it. In 200 BC it evolved in Ancient Rome made up of bags of clothed stuff with reeds, hay or wool.
However, during the Renaissance the mattress were made up of pea shucks, straw or feathers filled into coarse ticks and was covered with velvets, brocades, or silks. It started in 16th and 17th centuries where the mattress was placed over a bed consisting of a timber frame.
In the 18th century mattress was filled with cotton or wool made for modern times. The quality of line or cotton of the mattress improved in the Mid-18th century. The box was shaped or bordered, and fillings included natural fibers such as coconut fiber, cotton, wool and horsehair. The mattress was buttoned to attach stuffing to the cover and the edges were stitched.
To make the mattress less bumpy, the box-spring was invented in the 19th century. Hypnos Beds are manufactured by a popular brand Hypnos which is an innerspring mattress type of bed that started and been widely used in 1930.
A coated coil spring mattress was also introduced that basically consist of individual springs. Because of a need for hygienic and comfortable place to sleep, this type of mattress has been introduced.
A vulcanized rubber-coated fabric has been made known in 1940′s that was called air mattress was invented and has been widely used now. The one that was made available in the market for purchase in the late 1950 was the rubber mattress.
Sir James Paget invented the modern water mattress and designed by Neil Arcott in the 1960′s. Illness such as pressure ulcers have been prevented by mattress which was used for treatment.
The evolution of the mattress has become more luxurious in the late 19th centuries as latex rubber mattress emerged. In the 1970′s, NASA invented a mattress material that is now known as the memory foam.
As technology is rising, the mattress is more developed today. Latex, fiber,or polyurethane are raw materials that has been used to make mattress more durable, comfortable and mites free. Even though they are of high prices, still the consumers would consider in buying luxury mattresses.
