Sometimes when we see prices of leather furniture we notice that some are much more expensive than others. You might have an idea of why that is the case but some people don’t. When it comes to furniture there are four different grades and they include Top Grain, Full Grain, Split Grain and Bonded leather.
Quality Leather Can Last A Lifetime
The first thing you probably already know is that leather comes from animal skin usually cows, also known as hide. This isn’t the best quality leather grade because it isn’t as soft as you can get. This leather is stiffer but can be dyed to make a sofa have an even color. Top grain can wear longer and are also very durable. If you are looking for good quality with an average price tag then Top grain would be in your range.
Full Grain Leather
If you can afford high end leather the better quality leather is called Full Grain. You can tell when something is full grain because it has noticeable uneven colors. This can be from a area of the cow where it had wrinkled fat or scratches. You should also notice how soft this leather is when you feel it. Although it is the highest grade some people will prefer the lower grade Top Grain just because of its more uniform appearance and better wear. Keep in mind also that full grain leather can change with age changing climates and sunlight exposure.
Split Grain Leather
There is also split grain leather which is normally labeled as Genuine Leather. It is made from pieces of leather put together to form a strong sturdy material. This is even more affordable than the Top and Full grain.
Bonded Leather
The cheapest leather which is also lowest grade is called bonded leather. This is made from extra bits and pieces of the animal’s skin and is bonded together with chemicals. This is the lowest quality leather because it isn’t as durable as any of the above.

Always do your homework before investing in something that is as large as this. You can do a lot better when you go into it knowing all the facts. Get the best for the price you are paying and get exactly what you are looking for. Make sure that you know the name of the leather you are buying, feel it and examine it to see if you can guess whether it is Top grain, Full Grain, Split Grain or Bonded Leather.
