Simmons Futon Mattress Review
Simmons futon mattresses are one of the few nationally recognized mattress brands that specializes in futons. If you’re in the market for a Simmons futon mattress or just a futon mattress in general, this guide can help you make an informed purchasing choice.
Simmons Futon Mattress

The Simmons brand futon mattress is typically a futon made by a private mark company under a license from Simmons to print their mark on their mattresses. This isn’t to say that the mattresses are “fake” or “phony”. Many of the products you use every day, from cell phones to carbonated soft drinks, are distributed on similar licenses. What you do need to realize are two key factors in this equation: cost and quality.
Futon mattress manufacturers selected to carry high-end marks like the Simmons futon mattress brand have been thoroughly inspected by Simmons to meet their criteria for quality, efficiency, and capability.
The manufacturer has proven that they have the precision machinery and skilled workers needed to craft a high quality futon mattress. They have also demonstrated their access to high quality raw materials at discounted rates due to their buying power and market presence. In addition, the manufacturer in question must have implemented a top notch quality control process and an efficient production cycle to keep costs down.
Huge name brands like Simmons futon mattress are careful when selecting manufacturers, as the consumer will associate the quality of the final product with the Simmons brand.
On the other side of the coin, you must know that a part of the final product price is passed from the retailer to the manufacturer, and another part is passed from the manufacturer to the licensor.
This roughly translates to a higher overall cost. This is justified by the exceptional quality you will receive when ordering a thoroughly refined product, specifically a complete Simmons futon set.
Simmons Futon Sets

One thing to know about Simmons Futon Sets: they look exactly the same as advertised, if not better. I’m sure that you’ve had an experience, perhaps with a tasty hamburger from a quick food restaurant, where the final product looked nothing like the picture your ordered from.
It’s become so commonplace in marketing that we’ve begun to accept and expect to be presented with a picture that grossly exaggerates the products quality. Many futon sets you order online look nothing like the pictured item, usually because the picture includes a mattress that is over twice as thick as the futon “pad” you will receive, and is wrapped in a futon cover that could easily cost 8 times the value of the cover that is included in the futon package. Not so with Simmons futon sets.
Simmons futon sets include thick wood frame that is heavy by futon standards. The operation is smooth and many of the frames have features not found on any other futon frame, such as magnetic latches for storage bins and fold-away side trays.
The included futon mattresses are supportive, offering a comfortable sleep that rivals many traditional mattresses. The mattress casing is tufted to fit the futon snugly; the casing will never sag or wrinkle like a poorly sized futon cover.
The mattress looks more like upholstered furniture than anything else. Simmons futon sets include everything pictured, even the coordinating pillows! While certainly pricey (expect to pay over $800 for a full size) Simmons futon sets are the simplest way to get that “magazine home” look.

A futon, simply place, is a small couch which turns into a bed when unfolded.
Traditional Futon
A traditional Japanese futon set generally consists of a mattress called a shikibuton, a comforter called Kakebuton, blanket called mōfu, and a pillow called makura. The makura is usually filled with beans, buckwheat chaff, or plastic beads. The 4 to 5 cm thick futon itself is flat, having a fabric exterior stuffed with cotton and/or synthetic batting.

Futons are designed to be laid on Tatami – a traditional Japanese flooring made from individual woven straw mats of uniform size and shape, bordered by brocade or plain black cloth, and packed with straw. Styrofoam may also be used with the recent ones. The futon can be folded away and stored in a closet called oshiire when not in used.
There is also a futon alternative called a “zabuton” (za, sitting + futon) which is a cushion for sitting, on tatami floors.
Western Futon
Unlike traditional futons, western versions are not designed to be stored away when not in use. It is really a bed – couch to be placed on a configurable frame for the dual purpose.
The western style has also gained some popularity in Japan. These futons are constructed primarily out of cotton and usually handmade. Though having close resemblance with conventional mattresses, they lack the same type of springs and synthetic casings. The western futon version is a cheaper and more convenient substitute to conventional beds.
Basic Elements of a Western Futon
There are three main elements of a western futon – the frame, the mattress and the cover and pillows.
The frame is the foundation for strength, durability and ease of use. It has to be made of a strong, dense wood which can withstand the stress of frequent conversions. The Futon frames are of three types – Bifold, Trifold and Loveseat frame.
In the Trifold frame, the mattress folds in thirds the long way while in the Bifold frame, the mattress folds in half and is best for couches and everyday conversion from bed to couch. In the Loveseat frame, the mattress comes in two parts – couch and ottoman – and is best for small spaces.
The mattress is the seat cushion to provide comfort for both sitting and sleeping. Futon mattresses have to be of excellent quality in order to avoid hard and uncomfortable futons.
The cover and the pillows are the finishing touches for looks and protection. The futon cover is supposed to be essentially decorative but it is also the component which protects the mattress from dirt and spills.
Futons are stylish, functional, and versatile; they can be integrated into nearly any setting.

Before You Buy a Futon
A futon can be used in different ways, but before Selecting A Futon, consider how you will use it.
While futons started out as simple mattresses in Japan that could be rolled up and stored away during the day, today the term “futon” refers to wood or metal frames that support mattresses or futon pads. Today, futons are available in a variety of sizes and place to different uses.
Futons are used in children’s rooms, guestrooms, family rooms and dens. They may serve mainly as beds in apartments or dorms. A futon is indeed a versatile piece of furniture, but before you buy one, consider these questions:
Broadway Furniture Can Help You Find A Fantastic Futon For Your Home
How Will You Use Your Futon?
How you plot to use a futon will determine what kind you eventually buy. Figure out its primary function. Will it be used for sitting and lounging, or would it be used for sleeping? Would you use it equally for both? Do you need it for a child’s room or the guest room?
How you place your futon to use will not only determine the kind of frame you use, but also the quality of the mattress. Be aware that if you are going to use it primarily for sleeping, a wood frame can provide a very firm surface. You might need a thicker mattress, or maybe even a mattress pad on top to make it softer.
What Futon Size Do You Need?
It can’t be said often enough, that measuring your space is one of the most vital steps before you buy furniture of any kind. Futons are available in twin, full, and queen sizes. King sized futons are also available.
Since futons take up a lot of room once they are fully opened out, make sure you have enough space to accommodate the futon you are about to buy. For instance a futon chair can open up to the size of a twin bed. It would also help to have any other furniture around the futon be easily movable to facilitate opening it, especially if you have to do it frequently.
What is Your Style?
What style are you looking for? Futons are available in traditional or more contemporary looks. They are available in wood frames or metal frames.
If you are seeking a more traditional look, you may want to consider futons with hardwood frames. Metal frames can offer a more contemporary look. You may even want to go with a combination wood and metal frame.
Futon covers can also help you further in the direction you want to go. Just as when you pick a fabric for your sofa, consider your needs and preferences when you buy a futon cover. You are not confined to one single style of cover or mattress.
