The Many Sizes And Shapes Of Sofas

Sofas.

We don’t really think about them that much. After a long day at work it is pretty easy to just come home and plop down on the couch without even thinking about it much. As far as furniture in modern homes go, sofas have earned a central spot and aren’t going anywhere any time soon. It is an interesting thing to take a look at the different types of sofas and related furniture pieces out there today.

Broadway Furniture Has A Great Selection Of Sofas

In western society, sofas come in many shapes and sizes. The standard couch is a relatively large padded structure that makes sitting down and relaxing easy and common. Maybe I’m just a lazy American, but I’m glad to have a couch. I don’t like the idea of trying to get comfortable, or trying to rest, on a mat down on the floor.

This ol’ body just ain’t what it used to be. I know I could get down to the floor, but I’m not sure I could get back up. Nope, for me, I need a big comfy couch that takes up lots of room in the house and never complains. And I don’t really care if it is a sofa, a futon, a couch, a hide-a-bed, a convertible sofa, or some other configuration. As long as the basic function serves me, that’s all I really care about.

It is interesting to take just a quick look at some of the different types of sofas. The first one is your basic upholstered couch. These are usually about six feet long, and are designed to seat about 3-5 people. They have a fixed seat and back.

They come in all sorts of fabrics, textures, and colors. They are relatively light weight and can easily be positioned in the home for maximum enjoyment of use. Another type is the love seat. This is a shorter version of the regular sofa and will typically seat 2-3 people. Both couches and love seats are sofas that are mainstays in most homes today.

A popular variation of the sofa is the futon. Futons are sofas that allow the back to be laid down so that it can be used as a sleeping surface. These make great furniture pieces because they are diverse, don’t take up any more space than a regular couch, and are relatively inexpensive. If you don’t have an extra bed for guests, these are a wonderful option to consider. A similar option worth taking a good look at is the hide-a-bed. These have both an up and a down side.

On the up side, they allow the same diversity that a futon gives because you can turn it into a bed. On the down side, these furniture pieces can be extremely heavy and cumbersome to move around. Believe me, I’ve moved a bunch of these and they are no fun. Some of the older ones seem to be bolted down to the floor. Thankfully, the modern varieties are much lighter. The good ones are designed to be quite comfortable to sleep on and I would recommend these if you know you are going to be able to leave it in a set place for a long time.

If you still want the diversity of a sofa bed, but don’t want a heavy one, you might consider the convertible sofas. These are great because they are designed and engineered with some really excellent mechanisms that allow utility without weight.

No matter what sofas you look at, be sure to look for quality and workmanship. Have fun checking out the many different designs and you are sure to find the one that will be just right for you.
